Sunrise Community Garden

Sunrise Garden is on its third year in partnership with Hillside Community Center, an historically poor area of our city that has been deemed a ‘food desert’ by local experts. Currently, all of our materials and labor required for the garden are donated by J&P and community members; all food items cultivated are likewise donated back to the community.

Sunrise has served as a place for community building and through it, the J&P is able to offer educational events around sustainability and gardening, helping to build community in that neighborhood. Residents of Hillside work alongside volunteers in the garden and likewise reap the rewards of their efforts as they are able to utilize the gardened items in their homes.

Any items not donated to the community are sold at local farmers markets for whatever people feel comfortable paying and are then donated back to the program at Hillside.

Note: Hillside Community Center has since closed the garden
